Krakow, Poland (Ghetto) 1941
I choose to survive and get on the train to keep my promise to myself
Get in or Die
Plaszow Concentration Camp 1942
I am so happy that i found a way to hide during the day. It has helped me keep some of my strength.
Observant: "At school, the Polish boys wouldn't play soccer with me anymore, and no Poles or Germans bought shoes from my fathers store. Food became scarce too, and more expensive." Pg.8
Wieliczka Salt Mine 1943
I am so tired and hungry everyday but i just have to keep my self going
Determined: "They didn't even point them at me for the message to be clear: It was either go where this truck was taking me or die here on the streets of Krakow. I had sworn to myself I would survive, so I made the choice that kept me alive, if only for the moment, and took a seat on the truck." Pg.63
Trzebinia Concentration Camp 1944
Ingenuity: "Tomorrow after roll call, I could disappear into the barracks instead of showing up for my job. People were reassigned all the time. No one would know I was gone. I could sneak back and hide under the floor." Pg.89
Perseverance: "I was given my own carbide light, my own pickax, and my own place to work. It was heavy work, and boring; there was nothing to it but swinging my pickax again and again, breaking off big chunks of salt that another prisoner shoveled into a donkey cart. I chipped away, my arms already starting to ache from weakness and malnutrition." Pg. 102-103
Self Control: "I fumed as I hefted the stone and trudged back across the muddy compound. But they wanted me to be angry. They wanted me to say something, frown, or mumble curses at them. They were watching me for it. Watching all of us. Like schoolyard bullies, they wanted to provoke us, and then they would beat us as punishment." Pg.108
