  • California wants to be a free state so it odesn't matter what the government says
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • The compromise allows slave states

  • They did not want a chance for slave states to form. They want to abolish slavery but that compromise allows slave state to form below the 36-30 line.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • We have to agree with the compromise to get Missouri as a slave state.
  • Ya if we pass the compromise we will get Missouri as a slave state.
  • Northern states believed in federalism so they thought the federal government should be able to decide if it was a free state or not.

  • Southern slave states came from, the early republicans that believed that state's rights were superior over the federal government. Calhoun argued that neither congress or any territorial gov had the authority to ban slavery or regulate it in any way.

  • They feared that the compromise would make it so there was 2 more free states than slave states in congress and that slavery would be abolished so no one would work on plantations.
