Jamestown Storyboard Lindy Godwin History PAP Period 8
SOCIAL-During the years 1609-1610 in Jamestown things got so bad that settlers were forced to eat horses and leather boots. This time was known as the "Starving Time". Over half of the settlers died due to drought, Indian attacks, and starvation during this time.
House of Burgesses
POLITICAL- In 1619 the House of Burgesses was created in order to make immediate decisions for the colony by a form of government. Even though the King James l still ruled the colony, it was hard for him to govern from such a distance. Therefore this representative government was made.
ECONOMIC-Just when things were starting to get really bad for Jamestown, John Rolfe came and started planting a new kind of tobacco. This became known as a cash crop and ended up making a lot of money for England. In the end this is part of what made Jamestown such a success.
GEOGRAPHY- Jamestown was located along the James River in a swamp. The area had very fertile soil but it was home to many virus carrying mosquitoes. This caused a lot of disease and death for Jamestown.
Why is it surprising that Jamestown was a success? It was a surprise that Jamestown was a success because at first there was starvation, drought, and the people had brought over too many gentlemen that would not work with their hands. Then when all hope seemed lost Captain John Smith came and threatened not feed them if they refused to work. Then John Rolfe came over and planted a new type of tobacco that would later make England a ton of money. Therefore making Jamestown a success.
