In 1587, John White and 120 colonists landed in Roanoke Island and established a colony. The colony was thriving and the colonists made allies with the Croatoan Indians, who lived fairly near them.
They thought everything was going well until supplies ran low. John White decided it would be best for him and some others to sail back to England to get supplies.
White got back to England and got enough resources for his colony. However, due to problems in his country, he was unable to leave for the another 3 years.
I need to leave now
Finally, after what seemed like forever, White finally made his journey back to Roanoke with all the supplies for his colony.
When White and his men got to the settlement, they found that no one was there. The colonists were gone without a trace. The only clue they left was the word "CROATOAN" in a tree.
Where is everyone?
It says CROATOAN
What John White didn't know, was that over a year earlier the colonists ran out of supplies completely. So they sailed to Croatoan Island, where their allies the Croatoan Indians lived. In order for John White to know where they were, they carved the word "CROATOAN" into a tree.
