  • Hugh Capet (Capetians)
  • Those nobles had no idea!
  • Philip Augustus
  • King Louis lX
  • Hugh Capet was crowned by nasty feudal nobles that underestimated him. He grew with power and accomplished many things. He made the throne hereditary which means whoever is crowned is a part of the royal family, he added lands by turning nobles against each other, won the support of the church, and built an effective government.
  • Saint Louis
  • Declared Saint, King Louis lX!
  • Phillip Augustus was a very smart and outstanding king. Instead of appointing nobles for military spots, he paid middle class men, granted charters to many new towns, quadrupled royal land holdings, brought English-ruled lands into control, organized a standing army, introduced a new national tax.
  • Phillip lV
  • Tell the Pope to pay up!
  • Louis lX was one of the most loved and admired kings. he loved the idea of a perfect monarch. He was also deeply religious. He attacked heretics and Jews, led thousands of soldiers in 2 wars against Musilms, He also did much to improve royal government. He sent traveling officials, he expanded the royal courts, outlawed private wars and gave more rights to people who didn't have land. He even personally heard cases under a tree.
  • Estates General
  • Saint Louis is also known as Louis lX. He was declared Saint because he loved the idea of a perfect medieval monarch and was generous, noble, and devoted to justice and chivalry. Not anyone could become a Saint, Louis lX was that cool.
  • Philip lV became king and had a cruel way to raise royal power. He had an idea to start collecting taxes form the clergy/church. His new idea backfired when he clased with Pope Boniface Vll. The Pope said he had been set over the king by god so he forbade the king form taxing him. Phillip then said he'll punish anyone who doesn't pay up. Since the Pope didn't like the idea the king sent troops to arrest him but he escaped, although he did eventually die.
  • King Phillip lV had to united the French support by setting up the Estate General in 1302. The Estate General was an assembly where people came to talk and have meetings about the estate (property,money,land,etc.).
