During the rising action, Mr. White wishes for 200 pounds, but only receives it as compensation for his son's death. He also wishes for his son to come back to life, but his son comes back knocking on their door in a different form.

The knocking stops, and their son is gone.
Mr. White burns the monkey’s paw, and Mrs. White divorces him for not wishing for their son back.
