  • Hernán Cortés, Spanish conquistadores, is greedy for gold.
  • Montezuma II, Aztec emperor, is convinced, initially, that Cortés is a god wearing armor.
  • So when Cortes asks for gold, Montezuma gladly gives him a share of the Aztec empires gold.
  • But Cortes wanted more gold, so him and his men killed many Aztec warriors and chiefs during the Aztecs spring religious celebration.
  • The Aztecs rebelled and drove out Cortes's forces.
  • The Spaniards struck back, despite being outnumbered, and conquered the Aztecs in 1521.
  • But most importantly, the Spaniards were able to conquer the Aztecs because of the diseases Europeans brought with them; diseases the Natives had never been exposed to before. By the time Cortes struck back, the Aztec population had been greatly reduced.
  • The Spanish were able to do this because of the difference in weaponry, and by allying with the natives that resented the Aztecs.
