We are getting out of Los Rafas! Your uncle may not agree with me, but I want to be closer to work.
No one here looks like me!
Papa and Uncle Luis argue because Papa says he wants to move to town instead of staying in the country in order to get closer to work, but Junior realizes that he is the real reason Papa wants to move. Papa knows that Junior will grow up in an English speaking world and wants Junior to go to a high-quality school.
Ugh! I wish you didn't have to come with me!
On the first day of school, Junior joins a group of older boys in 3rd grade, called the Los Indios. They are innocent, they didn't do anything gang-related, like many kids (Anglo) thought. They just walked through the "enemy" territory every Saturday and they would sneak into the Rathouse Movie theatre.
Who is this dude, Junior?
One day after school, the Los Indios decided that it was time for a new exploration and then "hunted" down a kid from the nearby public school. A couple days later, they caught him and threw a couple punches, but then released him because it "wasn't worth it". That Saturday, Junior earned money by doing so he could go to the Rat House later that day. While he throws away the trash,he sees the boy get beat up, who happened to be his new neighbor.
The Los Indios rule!!!
Mama came outside and started talking to the other boy's mother. Junior then finds our that he is forced to bring the boy he beat up, Named Denver, to the Rat House to hang out with the Los Indios. Junior didn't want to take Denver with him, he did because the alternative was staying in his room. And he had to go to the movie because the Los Indios always counted on Junior buying the ticket to sneak the rest of them in.
By the time they got to the Rat house, Junior didn't know what to say to Chango and the rest of the Los Indios. He was very nervous and uncertain of how they would react. This is a big problem.
Chango was not happy with Junior for bringing Denver, but Junior thought quick on his feet and told Chango a lie that Denver was an "Indian" from Oklahoma. Chango was skeptical but eventually, the group accepted Denver.
