  •              Man vs. society
  • The conflict is man vs. man. The main character Lyddie goes home, when mistress Cutler is gone, without informing mistress Cutler. When Lyddie returns, mistress Cutler fired her. The conflict is Man vs. man because mistress Cutler caused a conflict to Lyddie, and mistress Cutler is a human being (man). Quote: "The mistress face was red with heat or rage...'you're dismissed!' the woman said." pg.44 
  • Lyddie has to walk in the snow to  Vermont, to become a factory girl, science she lost her job at the tavern, and also because Factory girls get paid a lot. she faces a conflict with the weather. It is Man vs. Nature because she has to walk in cold weather, and rain. Weather is part of nature, so the conflict is man vs nature.Quote: "Then, just at dusk, the sky opened, and it began to rain- not light spring showers, but cold, soaking torrents of rain, streaming down her face, icicling rivulets down her chest and legs." Pg. 47
  • The conflict is man vs. society. Lyddie has a argument with Amelia and Betsy. The argument was about if they were treated like a slave or not. Lyddie stood up for herself and said she. this is a man vs society conflict because she is not a slave, but the society thinks that she is a slave. Quote: "I ain't a slave!" said Lyddie fiercely. "I ain't a slave." "Of course you aren't." Amelia's confidence had returned and with it her schoolmarm manner." Pg. 93
