Storyboard Text

  • You know, it used to be much easier to met medicine but much harder to rely on it.
  • Really? My grandpa, Harvey Washington Wiley, worked on getting drugs regulated.
  • Oh right! And there was an issue with narcotics and a contaminated smallpox vaccine.
  • I remember him telling me that he wanted a single definition for what a drug was, and that standards were needed.
  • I know the many advantages, such as safety of new drugs & testing of every part of the drug before it meets the consumer, but are there disadvatages too?
  • Probably; I think doctors guilted consumers into thinking they needed them.
  • WHAT?!
  • I know. Even the FDA made complications; sometimes they would focus on the wrong thing during testing, and it would take forever to test the new drugs!
  • Not to mention how expensive it must've been. What other impacts were there?
  • Well, doctors gained money and popularity, competition between companies increased, a drug could make or break a company, and the FDA slowed it down.
  • Even formula, no sick babies here thanks to those regulations!
  • But hey! Look at the positive side! People couldn't hurt themselves through self medication anymore, and this led to the regulation of other consumable products.
  • MOMMY!
  • Bye kids!
