Introduction to Positive PsychologyA discipline that deals with the fundamental issues of life with the simplicity of the natural sciences (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi,2000, as cited in Lino, 2016)
Hi Jean I am glad that you have focused your energy and time to understanding this discipline ? First tell me what you recall from the lesson? Let's walk and talk about this, on my way to the office.
Hello Professor X. I was happy to be a part of your lesson on Positive Psychology. Can you tell me about the History of Positive Psychology?
You must consider its origins?
Wait a minute! Slow down young lady. I am not as energetic as you.
I recall that “Positive Psychology is the scientific study of what goes right in life, from birth to death and all stops in-between” (Peterson 2006, as cited in UWIOC, 2021)
According to Lino (2020), the Father of positive psychology - Martin Seligman and cofounder - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, acknowledged the need and strength of this discipline.
Howard Gardner and Abraham Maslow also played a vital role in this field.
Listen carefully!During480 and 323 BC Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and others focused on morality and virtue (to live a good life). Also, from the early 500 – 1500 AD, Christian teachings of happiness found in the afterlife, as well as, cardinal qualities.
You can simply refer to UWIOC (2021) p.9
So too, in the 14th and 15th century Renaissance and Age of Enlightenment where moral behaviors increased happiness by John Stuart Mill and others.Later on, in the late 19th and 20th century New Though Movement by William James – Principles of Psychology and Normal Vincent Peale – Power of Positive thinking impacted.
Thank you Storm. I am on my way Jean.
Consider too the the branches of exploration namely - FLOW coined by Mike Csikszentmihalyi, mindfulness and learned optimism (Test Prep Gurus, 2012)
Sorry for ease dropping but I must add that a few others like Carl Rogers, William James and Martin Seligman played a vital role in this field.
Fascinating! When I merge the things I've learnt today, it seems like Positive Psychology completes the dated field of Psychology.
Thank you Professor X, for your enlightenment on the History of Psychology. I feel motivated to do more research. I wonder what will happen next in this field?
It was a pleasure.. For me experiences like these are beneficial for both myself and this school. Personally, it makes me feel fulfilled and happy.
