Mary grew up being cared for by her ayah and other native servants. She had to stay inside most of the time because she was almost always ill and sickly.
Since there was a recent outbreak of cholera where she lived that took the lives of everyone she knew, she was sent to go live with her uncle.
When she first arrived she wasn't sure what to expect. Misselhwaite Manor was located on a moor which was dark and dreary.
She soon began to explore the house and it's grounds outside.
She noticed that a tree was outside the garden wall and wondered why that was. One day her friend the robin showed her where a mysterious key was. Soon after she decided to walk around and noticed a door covered in ivy. She tried the key and it worked! The tree that she happened to see was the one inside the garden.
Soon after she had found the garden she made a new friend named Dickon, whose sister worked in the manor as a maid. Together her and Dickon made the garden grow.
