An average cowboy in the 1800's was around 24 years old. New Mexico's land didn't have much fertile land because the water supply was low. Many homesteaders found it very difficult to farm ans they would only make around $1.50 a day.

Harvey Houses were the most famous restaurants found in New Mexico. The Harvey houses were named after Fred Harvey. Harvey Houses became a key part of the Railroad's success. Many tourist would stop and dine here at the Harvey Houses.
Tourism was one New Mexico's largest businesses. Many tourist would visit restaurants, the railroad, and ancient pueblo villages. Some tourist would sometimes take new things they discovered in New Mexico and would never return it.

The wild west was full of outlaws, guns, crime, and violence. There was some good people but the outlaws came to steal cattle,gold, silver, and any possessions of value. It would be dangerous walking around without protection.
