In Act III Macbeth ordered three murderers to kill Banquo and his son. Because Banquo was getting suspicious about him killing the king. The murderers were successful on killing Banquo but his son escaped. Macbeth was hosting a banquet and sees Banquo's ghost sitting in the kings chair and Macbeth freaks out.

In Act III, scene 4 the theme started off by having Banquo's ghost appear on Macbeth's chair and Macbeth as he goes to sit down sees Banquo's ghost staring at him. On line 50 of Act III, scene 4 Macbeth says " Which of you have done this?" insinuating the start of Insanity being the result of a guilty conscience. And by line 52 the theme has finally developed by Macbeth saying, "[To the ghost]. Thou canst not say I did it. Never shake thy gory locks at me." showing that his guilty conscience has made him see Banquo's ghost after he has ordered for his murder.
