  • Theme Emergence
  • First Witch. All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!  Second Witch. All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!  Third Witch. All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!
  • Theme Emergence
  • Lady Macbeth. [Reading the letter] “They met me in the day of success, and I have learned by the perfect’st report they have more in them than mortal knowledge. When I burned in desire to question them further, they made themselves air, into which they vanished. Whiles I stood rapt in the wonder of it came missives from the King, who all-hailed me ‘Thane of Cawdor,’ by which title, before, these Weïrd Sisters saluted me and referred me to the coming on of time with ‘Hail, king that shalt be.’ This have I thought good to deliver thee, my dearest partner of greatness, that thou might’st not lose the dues of rejoicing by being ignorant of what greatness is promised thee. Lay it to thy heart, and farewell.
  • Theme Development
  • The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step On which I must fall down or else o’erleap, For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires. The eye wink at the hand, yet let that be Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see.
  • Unchecked Ambition
  • Theme Development
  • [aside]. Time, thou anticipat’st my dread exploits. The flighty purpose never is o’ertook Unless the deed go with it. From this moment The very firstlings of my heart shall be The firstlings of my hand. And even now, To crown my thoughts with acts, be it thought and done: The castle of Macduff I will surprise, Seize upon Fife, give to th’ edge o’ th’ sword His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls That trace him in his line. No boasting like a fool; This deed I’ll do before this purpose cool. But no more sights!—Where are these gentlemen? Come bring me where they are.
  • The Despair of power
  • Tone
  • Bring me no more reports. Let them fly all.Till Birnam Wood remove to Dunsinane I cannot taint with fear. What’s the boy Malcolm? Was he not born of woman? The spirits that knowAll mortal consequences have pronounced me thus:“Fear not, Macbeth. No man that’s born of womanShall e’er have power upon thee.” Then fly, false thanes,And mingle with the English epicures. The mind I sway by and the heart I bearShall never sag with doubt nor shake with fear
  • Unchecked Ambition
  • Figurative language
  • The Thane of Fife had a wife. Where is she now? What, will these hands ne’er be clean? No more o’ that, my lord, no more o’ that. You mar all with this starting.
