words don't compare to seeing something in person
i remember seeing the teacher scold the kid for using a "bad" word that day.
"mommy what does nigger mean?"
in the first paragraph it talks about how written word is inferior to spoken.
transformed nigger to signify the varied and complex human beings they knew themselves to be.
she first hears about the word "nigger" when it comes out the mouth of a 3rd grader.
the author has always heard the word but never in the way it was said to her.
here the word has a positive meaning rather then the negative one.
the purpose of this was to inform the reader of the words history.
i believe the word can be used in a negative way depending on the tone of the person saying it.
