I'd sit in these stocks for another 5 hours to see the look of William's face that night.
Nat! How could you do that to William?
I say, always marry for love.
I just don't know what to do about William.
Kit is right, Prudence.
I won't leave! I'll never leave!
It's too dangerous, Prudence.
Nat and 2 other sailor boys put jack-o-lanterns in the windows of William's house on All Hallows Eve. Nat does it because he is jealous of William. His punishments are to pay 40 shillings, or $10, sit in the stocks during the meeting and 2 hours, and if he steps foot in Wethersfield, he gets whipped 30 times.
Kit told Hannah about what Nat did, and how she is engaged to Willliam but is only with him to escape working all the time. Hannah said that people who marry for love are happier. Kit learns that Nat has been at Hannah's, helping Prudence. Kit feels jealous because they're together, happy, and she's not there, and she feels replaced.
Prudence has changed from being scared for visiting Hannah, to wanting to live with Hannah, not wanting her mom to punish her, to not caring if someone punishes her, shy and introverted to outgoing and comfortable. Kit and Prudence will not be at Hannah's house at the same time ever again.
