Mr President, the British are trying to take South America.
How do we stop them?
I have an idea
After many years of war, Mexico finally gained its independence from Spain in 1821. Along with them, much of Southern and Latin America had broken free from European rule.
Sounds good to me!
The Monroe Doctrine will help ensure Americas peace and prosperity.
Many other European countries wanted to help Spain take back there colonies which worried America and Britain. The British wanted to collaboratively work with the US to protect trade with Latin America. This troubled many American leaders.
Let us conquer Mexico!
I don't think so!
Secretary Adams proceeded to tell President Monroe the situation with Britain. They agreed that it would be best to act alone, leading to the creation of the Monroe Doctrine.
I am so happy that we have the Monroe Doctrine to keep us safe!
The Monroe Doctrine
President Monroe quickly took his message to Congress where it was passed in December of 1823. He explained how this would show Europeans that America would not tolerate anymore colonization.
When Europeans came to America attempting to colonize they were immediately stopped as the Monroe Doctrine acted as a "fence" protecting the Americas.
South and Latin America were both satisfied with the Monroe Doctrine as it ensured their independence. As for America, it gave them access to the land's natural resources and secured there power over more territory.
