An illiterate peasant who led the medieval French army in the Hundred Years War
JOAN OF ARC
By Anna Lightfield
May I lead your knights to free France from the English?
And make you King?
Joan started hearing voices at the age of 13. They told her to help Prince Charles become the King of France. They also told her to free France from the English.
Joan also had very realistic visions of saints such as Saint Michael and Saint Catherine. However, she chose not to do anything about it just yet.
When Joan was 17, she dressed up in male clothing and cut her hair, so she could move more freely. She asked Charles to lead France in the war. Eventually, he said yes- but only because they had no other leaders.
Joan led the French knights to success several times, even after being impaled in the shoulder by an arrow from an English longbow while fighting.
But, in one of the battles, the English outnumbered her and captured her as their prisoner. No one came to save her, even though everyone believed she was a heroine in France.
