On February the 26th the Petrograd garrison was deserted
Over the course of the next few days a lot happened. On February 27th breakaway members of the duma formed a provisional government called the Petrograd soviet. The next day, February 28th, Nicholas II was prevented from returning to Petrograd.
On the 2nd of March the provisional committee declared itself a provisional government and the tsar signed an abdication decree. Then, on the 3rd of March the provisional government declared that a revolution had taken place.
