Storyboard Text

  • The Mesoamerican ballgame was an exciting and dangerous sport. This game included hitting a ball back and forth, and you could not use your hands or feet. This was a popular game played by many mesoamerican cultures for many years!
  • Hey this court looks like a Mesoamerican ballgame court!
  • Whats that?
  • What's so special about the court? And what ball did they use?
  • The ball was also special because it was made out of rubber. The balls varied in size depending on the location and could weigh up to 8 pounds! Mesoamericans were the first to use rubber, while in Europe they made leather balls with little bounce.
  • The court was unique becasue it was shaped like a capital letter "I" and is made of cut stone. The ballcourt was a symbol of the city's wealth and power.
  • WHOA! That's pretty cool. What reward did you get if you won...and what happened to the losers?
  • In some games, members of the losing team would have their heads cut off as a form of human sacrafice in a ritual to the gods. The winners were shown with praise, riches, and gratitude from the crowd.
