The Puritans wrote the Mayflower compact on the Mayflower in 1620
They wrote it to create a government. They had been blown off course by a storm and had ended up in the wrong place.
The Mayflower compact was one of the first examples of people governing themselves in American history. This specific document showed the colonists that they don't need England to be able to live their lives and could make their own government. Later leading to the American Revolution and American Independence from England
The Puritans were hoping to accomplish making a government and learning to govern themseleves.
This document allowed the Puritans to live peacefully without conflict for who was in charge.
