  • Mary has always loved her marriage with her husband Patrick and hoped that he will to.
  • Mary has always loved her husband Patrick and has always been happy with him and she hopes that Patrick feels the same.
  • Hullo Darling, Tired Darling (Para. 4, 7)
  • Speech
  • Patrick did treat Mary the same until he met another women that loved him and he loved her so now that he has had a change of heart he figures now would be a good time to tell her.
  • What is it Darling, What's the matter (Para. 32)
  • Listen I've got something to tell you, And I know it's kind of a bad time to tell you, but there simply wasn't any other way. (Para. 31, 36)
  • Thoughts
  • I'll get you some supper Darling you must be hungry.
  • This is direct characterization because it is describing the fact that Mary is addicted to her marriage with her husband Patrick. The fact that if she is that attached to Patrick if he does something that is hurtful she can change.  
  • Effects on Others
  • Mary had not wanted to live this way so, possibly without thinking she walked up and killed her husband.
  • So, I've killed him. (Para. 47)
  • This is an example of characterization because it is showing how Patrick is behaving in speech by describing what happened when he met this other woman, and Mary is trying to understand. In this scene Patrick is telling Mary that he has met another woman and wants to leave Mary so he can marry the woman he's met.

  • This quote shows a thought of Mary's feelings after what her husband Patrick said. The reader can use this piece of characterization  to Characterize Mary as a sensitive character.

  • This is an example effects on others for Mary because it describes Mary's reaction to how her emotions were in the conversation and how Patrick differed. At this time it shows that Nary is not exactly sad that she killed Patrick but what he said to her was very hurtful and for some reason she walked up and hit him in the back of the head.
