  • The town of Little Rock, Arkansas was full of segregration. This is the story of how all of that changed, told in the perspective of no other than Melba Patillo Beals.
  • Melba was just a normal girl who wanted to go to a new high school. But there were tons of angry segregationists who fought to keep her out.
  • Melba and several other students were trying to integrate central high, but the segregationists did everything they could to stop them.
  • Melba's life was quickly changing for the worst. Students were always assaulting her, and she could barely handle it. The conflict was person vs. person.
  • Next time, I'll kill you.
  • I can do this...
  • Thank you...
  • You're a cow!
  • I was frightened when I read about how cruel people can be just because of your race. But I was also inspired by Melba's determination to finish the year and prove everyone wrong.
  • Dear Diary, I finally did it! I survived my year at central high! I feel as free as a bird.
  • In the end, Melba survived her year at Central High, and integration began to blossom. I believe that the theme of this memoir is "To reach you goals, you have to have the will to carry on."
