In 1821, Mexico won independence from Spain. Mexico wanted to increase settlement, so they offered vast tracts of land to people who would agree to bring families to settle there.
Is this what they used to close the border??
WHY ARE THERE SO MANY TACOS!? WHY ARE THEY SO BIG!?
Tensions started to form whenever Americans didn't follow Mexico's rules, such as becoming Catholic or learning Spanish.
This all led to Mexico issuing a decree in 1830, which closed its borders to further immigration. American settlers Austin and Sam Houston attempted to make peace with the Mexican leaders, but failed.
Texans, including Americans and Tejanos, began planning to break away from mexico.
In 1835, the conflict grew violent. Mexican general Santa Anna took an army into Texas to punish the rebels. In that same year, the Texans captured the city of San Antonio.
