  • It all began with the Mexico in 1829. The Mexican Government forbid slavery, but the Texas settlers didn't care. Instead of slaves they were called indentured servants
  • The Plantation Life
  • When Texas became independent in 1836, their constitution allowed slavery throughout the Republic of Texas
  • Thanks to us
  • The number of slaves that lived in Texas consistently grew at fast rates. By 1845, there were about 30,000 slaves
  • The Unfairness of it All
  • Life for slaves was on the frontier of plantations. Most slaves worked daily in the sugarcane fields of the lower Brazos River. Others worked with livestock on the farm or worked as servants in the house
  • Agriculture in the Republic of Texas increased by 600% with slaves doing all of the work
  • At the end of the a days hard work, slaves liked to maintain a social life, and spend time with family and praise their religion. Slaves were treated with the most disrespect from other people. They lived in dirt-floor cabins with little diversity food. They had to carry out life knowing that a family member might be separated from them. They were never given the same and equal rights as other American citizens
