The next batter hit a huge pop fly to center field, but the center fielder could not find the ball, and the ball hit the ground. Luckily, he had an amazing arm and got the ball in before the runner could head for home.
So coach decided to change pitchers and as he was about to have me start pitching he asked “Your arm good?” I looked at him and said what I always do, “Never better coach!” I went onto the field, and gave up a hit…… The runner stole second and was now in scoring position.
I began pitching. This was my first time pitching in a high school, much less a varsity high school game. I was anxious to perform well
The next pitch, a soft ground ball to the third baseman. He fields it, throws it to our first baseman, a freshman we had called up for that game. The first baseman makes an amazing scoop and gets the third out….. We won the game!
After the game, coach thanked me for my hard work and my willingness to work through a position change and the pain my arm was in, and the team celebrated the whole way home.
