Communist leader, Nicolae Ceausescu, led a rigid and dicatorial regime. He led Romania with an "iron grip", and used secret police to enforce his policies. Opposition began to grow against his dictatorial rule.
Ceausescu's policies made for poor living conditions , and many people had food shortages. He also developed a program to urbanize Romania which angered the people even more.
The revolution began after thousand of people were killed for peacefully protesting. After this event, the military joined the revolution and they would not fire upon their own people. On Christmas day, Ceausescu and his wife were captured and executed.
