Storyboard Text

  • stand in front of the tree and measure your distance from it using tape measure. E.g 4.2m
  • Measure your eye level height to the ground  using a tape measure. Eg. 1.58m
  • the string should be at the front of the clinometer, grab the straw and look through it
  • using your clinometer,  measure the angle of the tree.
  • from a friend/partner, ask where the string lies
  • find the very top of the tree through the straw.
  • behind the string should be the angle (stay still for accuracy) eg. 20 degrees
  • write down the distance and angle of the tree.
  • angle = 20 distance = 4.2m
  • draw a right angle triangle and label the distance and angle
  • using sin, cos, tan, figure what fits with the placement.
  • 20
  • 4.2m
  • x
  • find the height using tan
  • tan20 = x/4.2 x = 4.2tan(20) = 1.5 1.5 + 1.58 (add eye level height) x = 3.1m
  • height = 3.1m
