  • Conflict

  • The setting takes place on a small plantation back in the early 1900's where the narrator and his baby brother live.
  • Climax
  • The new baby is born with disabilities, and is expected to die within days. When he does survive, his older brother cannot accept having a disabled brother and sets out to change him.
  • Falling Action
  • Because of the narrators pride, he teaches Doodle to walk and believes he should be capable of more. One day in the summer, the family finds a Scarlet Ibis in a tree which then falls and dies. Doodle develops some sort of connection with this bird.
  • Resolution
  • In their final day of training, Doodle shows that he will not be able to succeed in learning to swim and climb. Upset, the narrator and his brother start to head home when a storm rolls in. The narrator begins running home whilst Doodle can't keep up and calls out, "Brother don't leave me."
  • After waiting for his brother and not seeing him, the narrator sets out to find him, only to find him dead under a bush, in a position similar to that of the Scarlet Ibis.
  • Wait brother, come back...
  • The narrator realizes it is his selfish pride that got his brother killed.
