The settlers of Jamestown farmed tobacco a cash crop for money. After John Rolfe managed to find a sustainable way of growing it.
For a while Jamestown didn't have a representative government, they were just looking for gold. Until John Smith came and set one law at the start, "If you don't work you don't eat."
Along with the settlers there were the Patawomeck Indians. This group of natives helped them survive the winter by giving them rations of corn to help them through winter , but they didn't have enough as more and more people sailed in.
Jamestown was made in a swamp, because of this, many died from diseases passed to them from mosquitos . And because of it being a swamp they had lots of trouble growing crops for food.
