The story begins with Tom and wife, who were bitter and rude towards. They were so bitter and miserable that they hid money from each.
Tom was walking in the woods when eh seen the devil. He made a deal with the devil, the devil offered him Kidd's treasure which is buried nearby. This will him very wealthy. Tom couldn't refuse.
Tom goes home to consult with his wife the deal the Devil gave him, and she wanted him to take it but out of spite he refused. So, that night his wife went into the woods but she did not return. Tom revisits the Devil in the woods to accept his deal. Tom is heading to Boston.
Tom becomes wealthy but begins to worry about his soul. He really regrets his deal with the Devil and tries to repent by reading the bible and attending church. Yet he still has his nefarious business. One day, Tom hears a knock at his door.
The knock at the door was the Devil here to collect Tom's soul.
The people of Boston appointed someone to take Tom's place. However when they looked for the money he had, there was nothing left. Legend remains the black horse and a figure in a white cap can be seen on the marsh, " which is doubtless the troubled spirit of the usurer.
