1494 Christopher Columbus was an Italian Explorer for Spain. He was looking for a faster and safer route to Asia. He landed on San Salvador in October 1494
1519 Alonzo Pineda was the first European to Map the Gulf of Mexico (Texas Coast). He also mapped Jamaica to Cabo Rojo, Mexico
1519 Hernan Cortes captured the Aztec of Tenochtitlan (now called Mexico City). He conquered the Aztec Army. He sent gold & silver to Spain. Gave Spain a foothold in America.
1528 Alvar Cabeza de Vaca landed on Galveston Bay and was taken in by the Karankawa. Lived as medicine man and traveled Texas from tribe to tribe. He told stories of Cibola, the seven cities of gold.
1540 Francisco Vasquez de Coronado went in search of Cibola. Found the pueblo village Fray Marcos found. He split his group of 1,000 men in half, Half traveled west and found the Grand Canyon and the Pacific Ocean coast. Coronado's half found present day Kansas & claimed it for Spain.
La Salle established fort St. Lewis in 1682. 1685 La Salle landed at Matagorda Bay in Texas. They ran out of supplies. Hunger, disease, & the Karankawas killed most of the colonists. Expedition failed, but France got to claim Texas. La Salle was murdered by one of the few survivors.
