  • Frankenstein was written by a teenager. Mary was 18 when she first started to write about Frankenstein.
  • Mary was the daughter of philosopher & political writer. They both helped framed feminist Mary Wollstonecraft.
  • The novel came out of a ghost story competition. Mary won the competition. 
  • Shelley wrote Frankenstein in the shadow of tragedy - Mary's daughter died at 6 weeks after being born. 
  • Mary and Percy began meeting secretly at Mary's mother's grave. 
  • Mary said she got the idea of Frankenstein from a dream she had. 
  • Thomas Edison made a short film of Frankenstein, one of the first horror movies ever made.  
  • Frankenstein was the name of the scientist not the monster. The creature in the story actually remains unnamed throughout the novel.
  •  Even though her husband was cremated, his heart was calcified and unable to be burnt with the rest of his remains.  Shelley kept the heart wrapped in one of his poems. Until it was later found by her son. 
  • Mary's father may have killed to save his father's reputation. 
  • Frankenstein was the name of a castle which means Stone of Franks. Historians say that she had visited the Castle of Frankenstein and she learned of the scientist who once lived there.
