  • On October 4, 1957 at 10:29 P.M. Moscow time, the Soviets launched Sputnik 1. It was designed by Sergei Korolev. It was the first ever man made satellite to enter Eath's orbit. It started the cold war space race. After the Soviets proved that they were smart enough to put something in orbit America made in their goal to land a man on the moon, and they used Apollo 11 to do that.
  • Many feared that the Soviet Union now possesed rockets capable of delivering nuclear warheads.
  • Oh no, if the Soviets can send Sputnik 1 into space then they can probably use thier rockets to send nucler warheads our way.
  • The Sputnik 1 would make 1,400 orbits before the battery died. It made on orbit every 96 minutes.
  • Three months later the Sputnik 1 would burn up in Earth's attmosphere after the batteries died after 22 days in orbit.
  • 122 days after the launch of Sputnik 1 the U.S. launched explorer 1 the fist ever American satellite. By launching Explorer 1 it America to get back into the space.
