Coral reefs are a critical part of ocean ecosystems. Protecting coastlines from erosion and supplying habitat for marine life.
However, coral reefs have taken a lot of damage resulting from humans. The destruction of these ecosystems has resulted from:
Over polluted air from construction and other pollutants
Recreational misuse from for profit tourism
Destructive fishing practices and gear
But how it this factory far from the coast contributing to the problem? Our waste goes into the air not the water!
Air pollutants can be converted into acid rain or end up in soils that become runoff. Eventually these toxins end up in our oceans.
The solution isn't to simply not fish because the issue is over fishing. We need to put fishing regulations in place as well as develop equipment that is less damaging to coral structures.
I don't want to cause more damage to coral reefs. But I can't stop fishing, it's my job.
Look! I found some coral! Lets take some home!
Touching and removing coral from their reef not only can damage surrounding reefs but also displaces any marine life that uses it as shelter.
Our kids love to swim and explore the reefs. There are so many cool things to see!
Through proper education of the public, we can inform the current and next generations that we need to protect these coral reefs. Failure to do so will lead these ecosystems to disappear completely. It is important for us to not only protect coral reefs for our own enjoyment and scientific research, but also to preserve their biodiversity and the species that call coral their home.
