Storyboard Text

  • The Congress of Vienna, 1814- In the aftermath of revolutions in the Americas and France leaders from European countries convened in Vienna, Austria. They created new borders causing uprises in many countries, but nationalism was not a new concept. In order to look at European nationalism it's important to look back at the origins of nationalism in Latin America.
  • In Latin America people were starting to get angry about the unjust mercantilism and the strict social classes...
  • ... Fed up with the situation leaders like Simon Bolivar and San Martin worked to free Latin America from their Spanish oppressors. They used nationalism to motivate the people to rebel with San Martin moving Northward and Bolivar moving Southward. They made compelling arguments, one of the most influential being the Jamaica Letter written by Bolivar.
  • It worked and the Peninsulares fled in fear, ending Spanish rule in Latin America. This created many independent states that were unable to be unified due to the very thing that brought them together, nationalism. Their different cultures made it impossible to untie them despite efforts from Simon Bolivar. But meanwhile...
  • The French Revolution was extremely bloody and chaotic. The people of France had many motivations which eventually lead to an unorganized revolution. France went through more than 4 forms of government in 10 years. The final result of this was a dictator named Napoleon Bonaparte forcibly taking over. During his rule one of the most influential things he did was conquer lots of land for France.
  • Napoleon conquered many areas in Europe and he put his family members on the thrones. The people of these countries did not like having a French leader that did not understand their language or their culture. This indirectly inspired nationalism in these countries.
