In 1919, Shadrack, a 20 year old man, suffered from experiences while in the War. He is then sent to the hospital but is scared of his own hands so was put into a straitjacket. He was later released from the hospital but was then caught on the side of the road and was taken to jail. The sheriff sends him home and now he's scared that he might die so he starts marching through the town every January 3rd. While marching throughout the town he holds a Cowbell and a Hangman Rope and shouts "National Suicide Day , kill yourself or others."
In Chapter 1920, Helene Wright, daughter of Rochelle but granddaughter of Cecile, is married to her cousin Wiley Wright. Helene later gives birth to Nel, her only child. Later on, Cecile falls ill so Helene makes herself a dress and rides on a train to New Orleans. While on the train she is confronted and insulted by the conductor. And she was only trying to find the blacks only car. When she arrived in New Orleans, Cecile already died, they arrive at the house but only to find Rochelle. They spoke but left Nel affected by the encounter with Rochelle.

In chapter 1921, Eva Peace was abandoned by BoyBoy, but kept on with her life. Eva's son Plum caught an impacted bowl but was saved by Eva, Eva then leaves her kids with the neighbors and comes back 18 months later with a missing leg. Nobody is sure what happened but people speculated that it was ran over by a train.
With the money she builds a house which housed Hannah, Sula, and The Deweys. Plum returned from the war but starts an heroin addiction, one night Eva goes in his room and burns him to death just after cuddling with him.
