Long ago King Antiochus IV ruled over Israel. He demanded that if anyone in Israel didn't follow his culture or religion that they would be in big trouble.
The Jews became sad as they could not continue with there daily traditions , like reading the Torah and celebrating Shabbat. This made some of the Jews angry so they decided to disobey the King.
Priest Mattathias and his sons were joined by other Jews to fight against the king, one of his sons Judah a.k.a Judah the Maccabee took the role to lead the Jews in attempt to save there Jewish Heritage.
Even though the kings soldiers came on elephants the Jews managed to drive them out of Jerusalem. In honour of there victory they decided to tidy up the temple and light the Menorah even though they only had oil that would last one day.
But miraculously when they awoke the next day the Menorah was still oil left.
The Menorah lasted eight whole days without the candles going out. This is why Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah for eight days lighting a candle on the Menorah on each night.
