Felix gets dropped off at the orphanage. He is feeling very sad to part with his parents but realises that his parents love him and that they will be coming back to take him home.
The orphanage looks to be frightening place to live in. It is a huge old building at the top of a mountain in Poland. It's very cold on the mountains. The air is heavy, plants don't grow well here. Food is rationed out.
The orphanage is run by nuns. Nuns are women who live in a convent. They belong to religious order. They spend their time praying and working for the poor and needy. Mother Minka is the nun in charge of the orphanage.
"I haven't had a whole carrot in my dinner bowl once. Neither has anyone else. Even nuns don't get whole carrots and they get bigger servings than us kids because they need the extra energy for being holy." Felix page 2
Felix takes this as a sign that his parents are coming to take him. "Mum and dad are coming. They must be in the village. They must have sent the carrot up here with Father Ludwik to surprise me."
"Please, Mother," Felix says hurriedly. "Can Dodek be first in the bath?" page 7
