Patrick and Derek Seale Bakwa are brothers, born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, who came to the U.S. at the age of only 6 years old. Here's their story.
When we get to the U.S, I wish for a new family!
Yeah, me too!
When the brothers were still living in the Democratic Republic of Congo, they were grieving the loss of their parents, and had to fend for themselves in the big capital, Kinshasa.
Yay! We finally have a family that can take care of us!
Yeah, now we won't have to do everything by ourselves!
While they were still young, there was tons and tons of fighting going on in Kinshasa. Between the years of 1998 and 2008, over 5.4 million people died because of the fighting, and Patrick and Derek had no one to protect them during these years.
When Patrick and Derek were 6, they were finally able to leave their birthplace and start over in the U.S. They were very excited, but mainly to have a new family that will take care of them, and keep them safe.
Once they got to the U.S, they got a foster family and were really happy. They started going to school, and it seemed like everything was perfect.
