Louis Riel set out with 120 armed rebellions to Fort Garry, a major trading center in Manitoba. "With no troop to support him, Governor William MacTavish watched helplessly as the fort was taken over."2
I am Louis Riel. You have come to chase us from our homeland, and we are here to take our land back!
On December 10, 1869, Riel formed a provisional government, proclaiming the end of Hudson's Bay Company control over the Red River region. The government included both French and English inhabitants of the settlement.
