A furious, hostile mob invaded the Bastille on July 14, 1789. The Bastille was a state prison on the east of Paris. The prison became the symbol of the monarchy's totalitarian.

Prior to the French Revolution. King Louis XVI was the last bourbon monarchs to reign in France. He was Married to Marie Antoinette. In 1793 he was murdered by the guillotine for treason.
The Reign of Terror was triggered by a conflict between two opposed political factions. They were the Girondins and Jacobins. They were marked by mass execution of "Enemies of the Revolution". The death toll was in the tens of thousands. This included 16,594 guillotine executions.
