  • The 1789 Estates-General was a general assembly made by Louis XVI to suggest remedies to Frances financial troubles. The French Revolution began when the third estate became a National assembly.

  • The Declaration of the Rights of a man was adopted by Frances national constituent. This was August 1789. It is a key document of the French Revolution granting civil rights to commoners while excluding a large portion of the French populace.

  • A furious, hostile mob invaded the Bastille on July 14, 1789. The Bastille was a state prison on the east of Paris. The prison became the symbol of the monarchy's totalitarian.

  • Women's March on Versailles was an important event at the start of the French Revolution. It gave revolutionaries confidence in the power of the people over the king. In 1789 in France bread was the main food for commoners. Frances poor economy led to scarcity of bread and higher prices.
  • Prior to the French Revolution. King Louis XVI was the last bourbon monarchs to reign in France. He was Married to Marie Antoinette. In 1793 he was murdered by the guillotine for treason.
  • The Reign of Terror was triggered by a conflict between two opposed political factions. They were the Girondins and Jacobins. They were marked by mass execution of "Enemies of the Revolution". The death toll was in the tens of thousands. This included 16,594 guillotine executions.
