What? Why? But I am the king!
I want people to pay a tax of 100 pounds to cross a bridge.
Yes milord, but when you signed Magna Carta you agreed that to create taxes you need to ask the parliament first and they need to agree. You cannot create them by your own anymore.
Milord you can’t do that anymore, you need to ask parliament first.
I want your permission to create a tax where people need to pay 100 pounds to cross a bridge.

Once King John signed Magna Carta he agreed to be supervised by a council of 25 lords that would first need to verify and agree to all of John’s actions as king, instead of just letting him do whatever he wanted without anyone’s consent.
As a consequence of Magna Carta King John could not create unjust taxes for everything like before, instead he now needed to ask permission to the council or parliament of lords.
Magna Carta caused that King John, and much more kings after him, couldn’t do things that only benefit himself. He could not create unfair taxes, or imprison anyone he wanted without a fair trial, because he had a group of people supervising this actions. It was a really important document as for the first time in English law all classes where given the right to fair treatment, and to not be exploited by the ones above them.
