Frederick Douglass is a slave who is moving to Baltimore to be a field hand for Mr.Covey. Frederick used to be working for the Thomas’s, but got in trouble and was called uncontrollable because he was secretly learning how to read and was trading away their bread, so they sent him to Mr.Covey. The reason they sent him to Mr.Covey is that he is known as the “Slave Breaker”. They call him this because he is known for breaking slaves who are not following orders, which is why people sell or lend their slaves to him. Frederick does not like the move because of how Covey treats slaves, however Frederick had changed when he arrived at Mr.Covey's plantation.
When he arrived at Mr.Covey's plantation he had acted so good and worked so hard that he prevented himself from being whipped at all for 6 months. However Frederick and the other slaves were still treated poorly. They were worked in any weather and had enough food but not enough time to eat it. “Wheres Mr.Covey,” asked Frederick. “He's everywhere,” said the field worker. “He will crawl on his hands and knees to be silent so you never know if he's right next to and if he is right next to you and your not working, your in trouble.”
On the hottest day of the month Frederick and the other slaves were working the fan. At one point Frederick couldn't handle it, he passed out. Even Though Frederick couldn't handle it, Mr.Covey didn't care. As Frederick woke up he was immediately getting punished. Frederick was tired of getting beaten, so he ran into the cornfields to lose Covey and then to the woods to hide.
