Charlie Gorden, a mentally challenged thirty seven year old has wanted to be smart all of his life.
"My name is Charlie Gorden. I am 37 years old" "I told them becaus all my life I wantid to be smart and not dumb." (pg 1)
Because of his eagerness to learn, he gets chosen to be tested in an experiment to make him smarter.
"Their going to use me! Im so excited I can hardly write." (pg 2)
After the experiment his intelligence begins to rise. And he starts to complete tests aganist a mouse named Algernon that went through the same experiment as him, that he once couldn't complete before.
"I beat Algernon! I dint even know I beat him until Burt the tester told me." "I must be getting smart to beat a smart mouse like Algernon." (pg 6)
As Charlie's intelligence keeps rising. Algernon dies, and Charlie realizes that this might happen to him too.
"Algernon died two days ago. Dissection shows my predictions were right." (pg 18)
Soon Charlie starts to experience a decrease in his intelligence, books he could once read are starting to become harder. And he's forgetting information quickly, he comes to the realization that he's going to experience Algernons fate.
"I guess the same thing is or will soon be happening to me." (pg 18) "I'm forgetting things that I learned recently." (pg 19)
With no way to stop his old self from returning. Charlie accepts his fate. And leaves town for good not knowing the predicament of the future. His only wish is for someone to leave flowers on Algernons grave.
"Thats why im going away from New york for good. I dont want to do nothing like that agen. I dont want Miss kinnian to feel sorry for me" "P.P.S. Please if you get a chanse put some flowrs on Algernins grave in the bak yard..." (pg 22)
