  • 1) 'Awe of Nature' - In this story, it describes the swamp and the trees of the swamp in a way that it tends to set tone for the story, by the astonishing appeasement to nature. 2) 'Celebration of the Individual' - After Tom gains his wealth after bargaining with old scratch, he buys a luxury home so show off to everyone, he has money! 3) 'Emotion, Rather Than Reason' - Tom would rather make himself happy, rather than using reason to make both his wife, and himself happy.
  • Climax
  • In the 1700's Tom Walker and his wife live in the swamp, with a terrible relationship lingering over each other's head. They both gain pleasure from each other's agony, or misfortune.
  • Falling Action
  • Tom Walker meets with the devil, 'Old Scratch,' while taking a short-cut to his home, in an old Native American fortress. The devil tries to strike Tom a deal, yet he refuses. Then he goes home, to tell his wife he denied the offer to become rich.
  • Resolution
  • His wife went to make a deal with Old Scratch, since Tim did not. In which she goes missing for a few days, and Tom seeks to find her, only to find her apron hung in a tree, with only her heart, and her liver inside of the apron.
  • Tom gains pleasure in his wife's death, in which he embraces it by moving to Boston. Buying a fancy house, and he becomes Catholic, in hope that his past wont catch up to him. He becomes immensely a Catholic person, carrying bibbles everywhere and attending church all the time. All the while he tends to never get rid of his business with Lucifer.
  • One day, his past does catch up to him, he broke the promise of the Devil. Lucifer staps him to a black steed, to be rode around all of Boston for everyone to see, yet Tome is no where to be found the following day, week, or month. Yet the next day his house burns to the floor, under conspiracy of the devil.
