King Eurytheus commanded that Hercales go to Arcadia, to capture alive and bring to Tiryns the sacred deer of Artemis, called the Cerynitian hind.
In order to avoid angering the Archer Goddess, Hercales tried not to wound the sacred animal. He chased it across the northern regions of the earth for an entire year.
Hercales finally captured the deer while it slept. Others say he chased it to Arcadia and shot it. Shortly after, he was carrying the animal upon his shoulders and the Archer-Goddess and her brother were furious with him because they thought he killed the deer. Then he showed the animal was alive and explained the purpose of his venture.
