  • "We are like the Phoenix," said Abuelita, "Rising again, with a new life ahead of us." Pg:50  This means that Esperanza's life is burning down and their house burned down, but they will make new memories and start a new life in California 
  • "The door opened again and Mama walked into the cabin, her skin covered with an eerie brown chalkiness, and her hair dusted, like the car's fur." Pg:150 This means that when Mama got out of the dust storm, she was dirty and her hair looked like a cat's fur
  • "This whole valley breaths and lives," he said, sweeping his arm toward the distant mountains that guarded them. "It gives us the grapes and then they welcome us." Pg:1 This means that the valley has rich soil and provides food for Papa and Esperanza. Also, the valley gives them grapes and they make money through them.
