Lyddie was in charge of the fire place making sure the fire does not cease. Willie was supposed to be the one in charge but he keeps sleeping so they gave the job to Lyddie instead.
Lyddie was churning the milk to make butter. Triphena was telling Lyddie a story about that one time that two frogs fell into the bucket and made a metaphor using the story.
Lyddie was minding her own business peeling potatoes when Charlie came in surprising her. He came in to check on how she has been doing.
Since there was a blizzard happening outside the person who owns the tavern decided to hire two men to take care of the live stocks and do some March sugaring, since it was a cold weather they stayed in the kitchen from time to time to get at least some warmth. The men were not annoying but they did get in the way of Lyddie when she is working.(please dont mind the bad picture)
While Triphena and Lyddie was working they over heard the two men( Enoch and Otis)talking about a slave getting captured after running away saying how one of them should earn profit if they returned someones property. Triphena and Lyddie were thinking about what they said.
Triphena felt a bit mad and wanted them to know how it feels like being trapped working all day while Lyddie on the other hand was thinking what she would do if she was one of the slaves and she was planning to escape.
